Way back in 1991 two like minds bonded over their shared love of great funk and soul records, whilst stood in a taxi queue outside a Hull nightclub. Pearl's Cab Ride was born and the rest as they say, is funk-history.
They went on to recruit local musicians with the chops to fulfil the vision, and were soon gigging and recording throughout the early 90's at festivals and venues renowned for fans of cool, funky, soul and latin-tinged vibes – attracting the attention of the Acid Jazz label itself. Unfortunately, the funk fizzled out a mere 5 years later as some band members relocated from the city...
After a twenty-year hiatus they reunited to celebrate 100 years of Hull's famous Welly Club. This one-off was so popular amongst old and new fans that they just won't let them go.....The band’s musical roots hold fast today, however they are not a retro outfit. The band are still writing and performing new music in their sweat soaked live performances… Hell, they've even got their own beer!
The Colours EP was released in 2015, with two main tracks - the title track and "Sunrise", featuring a remix of Colours by electronica legend; Steve Cobby. "Sunrise" was also given the remix treatment by Mono-Life. This special extended nine-minute mix was played in full on BBC 6 Music.
Their widely acclaimed debut album BEAT ROUTES was released in September 2016.It was mastered by Pete Maher who has also worked with U2, The Rolling Stones and Katy Perry. The album is a mix of old favourites such as "Cookin' Pot" which represented the UK at the Cannes MIDEM showcase and new live favourites such as Look Around.
It was Album of the Year on Cambridge 105 Radio, and has had multiple tracks featured on BBC Introducing Leeds & Humberside, as well as the triple award-winning Burnsy Show on BBC Humberside.
January 2018 saw the release of the Autumn EP, another double A-side. 3 of the EP's 4 tracks were broadcast on BBC Introducing.
The band have just released their latest single, Sleeping which has featured as track of the week on BBC Introducing and resulted in the band being invited in to perform their second live session for them.
On the live circuit, Pearl's Cab Ride have been busy promoting this collection of tunes in the flesh. The gigs as ever, have been hot, sweaty and sold out affairs across the North and beyond, from their spiritual home at The Adelphi in Hull, to Smokestack in Leeds, Indie Café in Scunthorpe, and notable festival appearances including Boomtown Fair and main stage sets at Humber Street Sesh and Freedom Festival, they continue to gain more funkateers at each and every infectious live show.
They have also featured alongside the likes of Smoove & Turrell, Flamingods, 47Soul, Grinny Grandad & the Hot 8 Brass Band amongst others.
As many lucky people already know - the true magic of Pearl's Cab Ride is served up by the truck load when seen live..... These people are in the pocket. And very soon, you will be too.... It's the hippest trip you'll ever take.
"This is brilliant musicianship. They play with such passion and commitment it’s hard not to get hooked into the whole gorgeous soul vibe... All held together by singer Lyn’s sumptuous vocal.
GO AND SEE THEM LIVE!!"
